Toine Poppelaars, board member of the Dutch Water Authorities: “The water authorities see the CO₂ Performance Ladder as a powerful tool for making our sector more sustainable, including our own operations. That is why we have jointly decided on this call.” Certification for the CO₂ Performance Ladder is an instrument that supports the water authorities’ own climate and energy policy.
Tendering, but also obtaining a certificate
The water authorities have been using the CO₂ Performance Ladder as a tender tool for ten years now. With this they boost the market and encourage companies to (continue to) focus on CO₂ reduction. At the beginning of 2020, the first water board also obtained the certificate on the CO₂ Performance Ladder itself, in order to structurally reduce CO₂ emissions in its own operations: Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier. In the meantime, Hoogheemraadshcap van Delfland and the Vallei en Veluwe Water Board have also been certified and more water authorities are working on obtaining the certificate. And now there is the urgent advice for all water authorities by 2025 at the latest. That certification on the CO₂ Performance Ladder has added value according to the water boards has already been concluded from an evaluative study into the experiences of the water authorities with the certification process.
NETWORK MEETING on May 27
On 27 May, the Dutch Water Authorities is organizing a network meeting on certification on the CO₂ Performance Ladder from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm. Water boards working on this themselves share their experiences and inform participants of their learning experiences. In addition, it discusses what is required to certify at level 4/5. Maud Vastbinder of SKAO gives a brief explanation about this and Peter van Riswijk of the Province of Gelderland talks about the process they have gone through.
